Are you missing out on the best talent for your business?

The concept of flexible working isn’t new, and while many businesses are well on the way to implementing the technology that will increase their flexible working capabilities, others are lagging behind. Whether this is due to non-prioritisation of IT upgrades, or a lack of understanding about the impact digital transformation can have on a business, the impact is the same – The business will eventually fall behind its competitors, as they take advantage of more efficient working practices and collaborative tools available. In turn the most technologically prepared businesses will be able to attract the best employee talent.

So, if the idea of flexible working has been around for a while, why is it so much more important now? This is largely due to the changing workforce and the priorities of new generations who form a large part of it. Recent headlines have told that millennials will rule the workforce, as they will make up more than half of the entire workforce population by 2020. This generation will have a powerful influence on trends, tech-innovation, communication and the way we work.

When aiming to capture the attention of this new generation of potential employees, businesses must convey their company values and culture online and on social media, as this is where they will turn to for research. Companies looking to attract and keep talent need to prioritise digital transformation, especially as 93% of millennials say up-to-date technology is one of the most important aspects of the workplace, and 77% would accept or decline a new role based on the technology available.

The millennial generation have already had a massive impact on the way we communicate and are responsible for creating a world in which media consumption is rapid, multitasking is the norm and filtering information quickly is a necessity. As well as being great attributes for a potential new employee, these traits cause 77% of millennials to say a flexible work schedule enables them to be more productive, and they will actively seek out companies that offer this. In fact, flexibility is cited by 79% of millennials as a top priority when looking for a new job, leading to an increase in jobs offering working from home, flexitime, and co-working spaces.

The Microsoft 365 bundle includes tools that make it easier than ever for businesses to offer flexible working to their employees, through features such as identity management and secure mobile working. This allows employees to login quickly and easily from any location or device, so long as it meets pre-set security requirements as set by the organisation. Alongside specifically designed programmes such as Teams, this encourages a more collaborative approach to work and for some businesses could negate the need for a traditional 9-5 working week.

More businesses are using their technical capabilities to introduce flexible working, enabling them to attract a talented and loyal workforce. As businesses adjust to the ways in which this new demographic of workforce engages, those who utilise technology will be best placed to attract the talent they are looking to recruit.
